Phonics

Phonics at EBPS is taught through the Read Write Inc scheme. This is a method of learning letter sounds and blending them together to read and write words. As part of this, children have daily phonics sessions in small groups where they participate in speaking, listening, reading and spelling activities that are matched to their developing needs. These sessions are designed to enable children to develop the fundamental skills needed to support their learning across wider curriculum; with the intent that ALL children learn to read accurately and fluently and can apply their phonic knowledge to spell words.

Phonics is timetabled daily and taught using the Read Write Inc. programme. Children are taught in small, differentiated groups based on their phonic ability. This ensures every pupil is supported and challenged appropriately, allowing them to meet their potential as a reader.

In Read Write Inc. phonics lessons, children learn to read accurately and fluently with good comprehension and to spell correctly. Within the programme, children rapidly learn sounds and the letter or groups of letters they need to represent them. They apply their phonic skills to read both real and non-sense words (alien words). The children also develop their fluency and comprehension by reading both fiction and non-fiction books that are closely matched to their knowledge of phonics.

The impact of following the Read Write Inc (RWI) programme to teach phonics at EBPS will be evidenced in many ways. Learning walks will show that all RWI sessions are delivered consistently well across the school by all adults involved and that children are engaged in their phonics learning and apply this knowledge across the curriculum. In addition, pupil voice will show pupils enjoyment of reading and understanding of how phonics can help them with their learning.  Termly phonics assessment will indicate individual progress and will inform teaching and intervention to ensure progress continues. When heard to read, children will be confident, fluent readers who can answer questions about a text. Furthermore, results from the phonics screening check will show an increase on the number of pupils achieving the pass level.
