It has been a busy term in school, as ever, as we continue to try to achieve our mission of “Excellence in Everything” and giving the children here amazing opportunities which broaden their horizons and ensure they are good world citizens.
Design & Technology
Every half term, we alternate the teaching of art and design & technology to ensure there is clear teaching and skills progression from week to week, which then culminates in a finished product for an intended purpose and audience. In DT this term, Year One have been learning sewing skills and the different stitches to support them in designing and making a hand puppet (aided by lots of wonderful parent volunteers for the tricky task of threading a needle!)
Year Four have learnt about healthy foods, ingredients and the making of bread. The children designed their own type of bread with an array of flavours and shapes, to then serve to parents in their “bread café”. This was a lovely event and the children enjoyed getting some feedback and evaluating their products.

Finally, Year Six have designed and made a “dia del muertos” (day of the dead) mask linked to the Mexican street parades for this festival. They enjoyed displaying their masks in a gallery style to their parents after school.
History
To bring their history learning to life, Year Two enjoyed a “wow” day on the Great Fire of London where they dressed up in clothing appropriate to 1666 and learnt all about the fire and Samuel Pepys’ diary. The children also enjoyed a visit from a firefighter who taught them about present-day firefighting and fire safety, as well as a very exciting visit to Earls Barton fire station where every child got to hold the hose and squirt water – which was many children’s highlight of the day!

World book day
It was a wonderful “book-filled” week in school and the feedback we have received from the author’s visit on Wednesday has been fantastic!
Steven Vinacour enjoyed his day at our school tremendously and was really impressed with the enthusiasm and great ideas from the children in all year groups. He was also delighted with how many families pre-ordered his signed books online or queued on Wednesday after school to purchase one. So many children were inspired by the author’s visit to be writers and have started noting down their ideas for characters, settings and plotlines in special notebooks.
Special thanks to Mrs Warren for organising World Book Day events and to Mrs Chapman for setting up our World Book Day “shop”. Thanks also to the many PTA helpers who helper supervise the shop all day on Thursday – we are very grateful.
Bikeability
Finally, 48 of our Year Five children participated successfully in Bikeability (formerly Cycle Proficiency) and passed their level one on the playground and level two cycling safely on the roads. The instructors praised the children’s excellent behaviour, respect and listening. We are delighted to ensure we give our children this vital life-safety skill every year.
