KS2 Curriculum Statement
National Curriculum subjects are taught discretely but links are made between subject areas where this is deemed appropriate and beneficial to children’s learning. Maths and English are taught daily and children are given regular opportunities to apply their skills in reading, writing and maths across a range of subject areas. To bring learning to life, school visits, visitors and celebration events are a mainstay of the curriculum and wherever possible children learn through first-hand experience. It is our aim to ensure that the curriculum we teach builds on the individual talents and expertise of our children so that all have the opportunity to shine. Our children learn how to respect each other and to respect diversity, preparing them for life in a multi-cultural society.
Curriculum Drivers
To ensure that our curriculum meets the specific needs of our children and school community, stakeholders, including staff, governors, children and parents agreed that the following aspects should be the key drivers that permeate our curriculum:
- Knowledge of the World
- Emotional Awareness
- Enquiry
- Verbal Communication
Through our curriculum we aim to:
- Enrich children’s lives, broadening their knowledge and understanding of the world.
- Inspire children to have a love of learning that will last them a lifetime
- Develop children’s emotional intelligence and social skills
- Promote the school values of responsibility, empathy, cooperation, determination and respect.
- Prepare our children for Secondary Education by ensuring that all of our pupils leave Earls Barton PrimarySchool competent in maths and English
- Be flexible enough to respond to children’s interests, satisfying their natural curiosity through an enquiry-based approach to learning.
- Prioritise the development of children’s verbal communication skills, so that children are articulate and confident speakers in a range of contexts.
- Prepare our children to live in a multi-cultural society, promoting the British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect and tolerance of those of different faiths and beliefs
INFORMATION ABOUT ENGLISH
- English is taught through our skills based curriculum, incorporating the requirements of the New Curriculum through cross curricular learning experiences. This approach enhances and enriches the children’s learning of English skills, making them relevant and meaningful. Discrete English teaching is also a daily occurrence; ensuring that the necessary spelling, punctuation and grammar expectations are met.
- Reading - Each child is allocated a reading book through Accelerated reader and will complete a comprehension quiz on completion of each book. They will also take part in Book Talk sessions three times a week which will focus on fluency and comprehension. All year groups are expected to read to an adult at home at least three times a week.
- Spelling - Spelling rules are taught through a weekly spelling lesson. These will be displayed in the classroom and practised through regular dictation exercises. Year 3 /4 and 5/6 spelling lists will be sent home at the start of term for the children to learn. These will be tested during a weekly spelling bee.
- Writing - The teaching of writing focuses on a variety of different genres; linked to all curriculum areas, which are first explored and then modelled through the use of sentence stacking and guided writing. The children then move onto developing their own writing in the chosen genre. Ongoing assessment takes place through Big Write, which occurs twice each term allowing teachers to track the progress of writing skills. After each task new targets are set for the children to work on.
- Spoken Language - Speaking and listening are essential skills that are developed regularly alongside other objectives. Children are taught to develop and apply speaking and listening skills to suit a variety of audiences and for different purposes. They are given opportunities to tell and listen to stories and explore, develop and justify ideas and opinions in both formal and informal contexts. They are also encouraged to express themselves creatively in improvisation, role play, poetry recitations and other drama.
MATHS
Maths is taught using the White Rose Scheme and enhanced with Mastering Number sessions and Numbots in EYFS/KS1, and TimesTable Rock Stars in KS2. At Earls Barton Primary School we aim to give all children positive and fun experiences that will enable them to acquire the knowledge, skills and understanding of the subject, as a result, our children develop a good understanding of place value and the four operations of number + - x and ÷. We place a strong emphasis on shape and space with algebra and data handling, in line with the National Curriculum. Children are provided with problem solving activities, often relating to real life situations that give opportunities to use and apply their skills and knowledge.
Alongside explicit maths lessons, where they learn both written and mental methods, we aim to include mathematics where appropriate in our cross curricular activities, using practical, hands-on experiences wherever possible.
INFORMATION ABOUT MODERN FOREIGN LANGUAGES
French is taught weekly to all children in KS2 as the main foreign language. In year 2, children can get a taster of languages via a lunchtime french club organised by one of our governors.
