May and June have been glorious months, not just because of the beautiful weather we have been experiencing but because of the wonderful celebrations and activities we have all taken part in. There was the red, white and blue day to mark the Royal Wedding when we all came to school in our red, white and blue clothes of course!

The children learnt about the Royal Family, watched highlights of the wedding and made their own commemorative plates. Just prior to that we held our May Fayre. Following the crowning of our May Queen parents were treated to a magnificent display of dancing starting with a Maypole dance performed by year 4, followed by year 3 and 4  dancing aerobically to ‘Uptown Funk’, a country dance from year 5  and finally the infamous sword dance performed by our year 6 children. For the first time on record, we think, all stars were formed and dismantled without a sword being dropped!

The May Fayre is an event that is organised by our fabulous PTA who this year arranged for a real circus to be pitched on our field. This proved very popular and along with the numerous game stalls, raffle, BBQ and bar they managed to raise a considerable amount for the school. Part of this funding has been used to put new safety flooring on an area of the key stage two playground, which is a great improvement and makes this a much nicer space for the children to use.

Celebrations continued into June when we held our June Rose Day. Our EYFS and key stage one children wore brightly coloured summer clothes for the occasion and parents were invited in to watch our crowning ceremony and the wonderful dancing – country and line – performed by years 1 and 2.

More excitement in June came in the shape of residential outings. The children in year 3 stayed at Grendon for 2 nights and had loads of fun trying out canoeing, the Tarzan challenge, archery, bushcraft and of course the infamous swamp! There were some marvellous quotes from the children on their return with one child saying ‘In bushcraft we made our own tent then picked nettles (without getting stung!) and elderflowers to brew our own tea - it was gross!’

As I write this the year 6 children are about to return from their week-long visit to Swanage. If the photos they have been sending through are anything to go by then they have been having an absolutely fantastic time. I am sure they will all sleep well on the journey home!

In amongst all of this excitement there has of course been lots of in class learning. Some of this has been showcased to parents and peers through our class assemblies. Buttercup class took the theme ‘Rumble in the Jungle’. The children enjoyed sharing their artwork, the binoculars made in class and songs they had learnt. They did themselves and their teachers proud, performing very confidently with lovely loud voices.

Thistle class also did an assembly for us which was all about ‘sound’, the class’s science topic work this term. As well as giving the audience facts about sound, they performed a play, starring Mr and Mrs Bear. A Bruce Forsythe impersonator even made a surprise appearance! “Nice to see you, to see you……” The assembly concluded with the children reciting their class poem, ‘The Magic Box’, using actions from their text maps.

These assemblies showcase children’s talents but for some they relish taking part in sport so we love giving our children opportunities to enter competitions. Recently we entered a year 5/6 football team into a tournament at Goals Northampton against other schools in the county. One of the team stated: The football tournament was great fun. We all had a laugh, unluckily we didn’t win a game, but we really tried. If I ever have the chance to do it again I would love to.”

Meanwhile a group of 8 year 3 and 4 children attended a district tennis event. This was designed for children who had little experience of the sport to compete for the first time. Great fun and enjoyment was had by all our team. They all showed superb sportsmanship and improved their skills during the afternoon.

For those who are talented musically we were delighted to be able to participate in the village festival. Groups from our Choir and Orchestra, as well as string, guitar and woodwind players, and soloists from year 6 performed brilliantly at All Saints Church.

In all of the events featured here we have been wowed by our children and are extremely proud of them. I would like to say a big well done to them all, but also a big thank you to the many staff who give up their personal time in organising and supervising these wonderful opportunities. These staff are making memories that our children will carry with them always.
